Adrian Dyck - WMP Director

Adrian Dyck graduated with his Master of Music degree in Violin Performance from the University of British Columbia School of Music in 2001 and has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, and with orchestras in Canada, Europe and Asia. He is active as a teacher and performer in the Lower Mainland, having performed with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Film Orchestra, the Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra, and as first violinist with the English Bay String Quartet.

He is currently a core member of Lions Gate Sinfonia, a North Vancouver-based professional chamber orchestra. In 2009, Adrian enjoyed traveling to Japan with Lions Gate Sinfonia to perform at the Chiba International Cultural Festival. In addition to his role as a violinist in the orchestra, Mr Dyck served on its Board of Directors from 2008-2010 and is currently acting as a liaison between the players of the orchestra and the board.

Mr. Dyck was a co-founder and member of a folk-influenced ensemble based in North Vancouver that created original music for violin, piano, acoustic guitar, vocals, and a variety of percussion instruments. In addition to his role as a performer in this ensemble, Mr. Dyck was active in the composition and production of its music. The ensemble completed a soundtrack recording for a short film for the BC Cancer Agency, which was co-composed and produced by Mr. Dyck. In the Spring of 2011, one of Mr Dyckʼs compositions, Johnsonʼs Landing, was performed by the North Shore Celtic Ensemble and the Laudate Singers.

Mr. Dyck teaches violin as part of the North Shore Music Academy faculty and from his studio at Brockton School. He has recently taken on several private composition students who are interested in exploring the relationship between acoustic music and electronic music, using applications such as Logic and a variety of recording tools and techniques. Mr. Dyck teaches violin and theory to all levels of the Royal Conservatory of Music and his students have earned top marks and awards in examinations, auditions and music festivals. 

Mr. Dyck and Ms. Freeborn are the founders and directors of the World Music Program at Brockton School, an independent IB school in North Vancouver. In 2010, this program was selected as the only educational program in Canada to represent Canada at the ISME conference in Bejing, China. The World Music Program has as its highest aspiration the fostering of a compassionate global consciousness through the development of musical skills and the act of creating performance works. Recently, the World Music Program was selected again by the ISME to represent Canada at the ISME event in Thessaloniki, Greece this coming summer, 2012.

In his spare time Mr. Dyck enjoys cultivating a healthy lifestyle that includes meditation and yoga, walking in the mountains and on the coastline of Vancouverʼs North Shore, and studying systems such as Compassionate Communication. He also spends many hours each week volunteering in his community.

Paige Freeborn - WMP Director

Paige Freeborn graduated with her Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of British Columbia School of Music, where she was awarded the prestigious Graduate Fellowship. She has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, accompanist, and orchestral pianist in Europe, North America, and Asia. Ms. Freeborn has also trained as an orchestra conductor at UBC and in Kroměříž, Czech Republic. She was a co-founder and member of a folk-influenced ensemble based in North Vancouver that created original music for violin, piano, acoustic guitar, vocals, and a variety of percussion instruments. In addition to her role as a performer in this ensemble, Ms. Freeborn was active in the composition and production of its music. The ensemble completed a soundtrack recording for a short film for the BC Cancer Agency, which was co-composed by Ms. Freeborn. Ms. Freeborn also has a background in voice, having studied, performed, and toured as a choral musician, classical vocalist, jazz vocalist, and musical theatre artist.

Ms. Freeborn has operated private music teaching studios in Vancouverʼs Lower Mainland for the past 14 years and she enjoys teaching students of all ages and ability levels. She is a member of the BCRMTA (BC Registered Music Teachers Association), and the ISME (UNESCO-founded International Society for Music Educators). She regularly attends conferences around the world, exploring topics such as Community Engagement Through the Arts, Pedagogy, and Global Themes in Music Education and Cultural Policy Development. For the past seven years Ms. Freeborn has enjoyed operating a private teaching studio out of Brockton School. She teaches piano and theory to all levels of the Royal Conservatory of Music and her students have earned top marks and awards in examinations, auditions and music festivals.

Since 2008, Ms. Freeborn has served as President of Lions Gate Sinfonia, a professional orchestra based on Vancouverʼs North Shore. In this role she enjoys leading the orchestraʼs team of directors toward further good governance practices and she speaks, writes and consults as an arts advocate in a variety of different settings. In 2009 Ms. Freeborn enjoyed traveling with the Lions Gate Sinfonia to Japan to perform at the Chiba International Cultural Festival and she is passionate about bringing high-quality and enlivening performances to North Shore audiences both through the orchestraʼs main stage series of concerts and through their unique and innovative educational and outreach programs.

Ms. Freeborn has a background in team building, leadership development and coaching, and change management. She has worked with CEOs and employees for organizations in both the corporate and the not-for-profit sectors, and she enjoys merging her love of the arts with her knowledge of corporate training and governance.
